The Rink Training Facility
Ernst Hansch Construction Ltd. was selected as the Design-Builder to design and construction of a new state-of-the-art 94,500 square foot state of the art hockey training facility for the Hockey Rink Corp. to replace their original facility. The new facility positions The Rink Training Centre as one of the only fully integrated hockey Training Centres in Western Canada.
The new building is home to four tenants which occupy designated and shared spaces:
– The Hockey Rink Corp.
– 50 Below Sports & Entertainment
– Testify Performance
– Acquire Wealth Management
The new facility includes a regulation NHL sized rink with viewing for 700 spectators. It is the official practice rink for the Winnipeg ICE and home of the Winnipeg Blues, RHA and RHL. A separate training rink is used for 3 vs. 3 hockey games and for the Rink’s player development programs. The third ice sheet is a smaller rink used specifically for goalie development.
A 200 meter running track with high performance flooring overlooks the NHL size ice and rests above the Winnipeg ICE’s NHL quality dressing room and other team spaces including player lounge, video room, physio room, sauna room and coaches areas.
Other areas of the Rink’s space feature a retail store with skate shop, seminar rooms, a research hub, open and private office areas, meeting rooms, an equipment drying room with a space saver storage system, Zamboni room with custom snow melt system, heated rink viewing areas, and dressing rooms with full washrooms.
Custom systems were used to reduce hockey equipment dry time, manage the challenging climate in the rink environments and increase operational efficiencies through the building and building systems design. The building performs 13% better than 2011 MECB energy standards which has translated into substantial energy savings.
The deadline for the new facility to be completed and in operation was April 1, 2019. Through a collaborative effort with the Rink, Ernst Hansch Construction Ltd. was able to fast track construction to shrink the construction schedule to 11 months and met the deadline while remaining within budget.
